illfated unknown 4-mast-schooner in Stockholm ?

Post by loggerman »

Image

This picture was posted at http://www.forum-schiff.de asking for location, name of the illfated 4-mast-schooner and possible date. My very first idea was Stockholm as location, which was confirmed by others at the forum. Is that correct and can anybody identify the schooner and knows the date when the picture was taken?

The ship is the Finnish schooner MERILINTU, built 1920 at Säkkijärvi, 450 grt, 600 tdw.
On June 10, 1931 the Landsort pilots were finding the ship drifting outside the island. Later the steamship REX of the Sveabolaget towed the schooner to Stockholm. It was en route Sikeå - Denmark with a cargo of wood.
Then, in August 1943, it was towed into Trelleborg en route Finland - Kolding with wood, having been drifting around with up to 1½ meter of water in the engine room and short of drinking water.
Finally, in June 1946, the schooner sprang a leak outside Bremön en route Veitsiluoto - Stockholm with wood, drifted aground on Bremön with heavy damages, was towed to Finnkajen, Sundsvall. The cargo was discharged and sent by a barge to the destination. The hull inclusive the engine, a Bolinder hot bulb of 160 hp from 1920 plus aux.engines, motor winches etc was sold at an auction for SEK 8.000. The hull was broken up and used as firewood (ved).
